Smoldering jazz is kicked up with the intoxicating poly-rhythms of coastal Perú as trumpeter and composer Gabriel Alegría continues to chart a fresh new idiom. Combining his own distinctive approach to the jazz trumpet with the rich heritage of Afro-Peruvian music, Alegría is joined by saxophonist Laurandrea Leguía, guitarist Yuri Juárez, bassist Ramon de Bruyn, drummer Hugo Alcázar and master percussionist Freddy “Huevito” Lobatón-who plays traditional Afro-Peruvian instruments such as cajón (box drum) and quijada (jaw bone) and adds spectacular passages of zapateo dancing to the Sextet’s original sound.

October (tba)
noon - 7:00pm
3rd Annual House of Jazz
SAHA Park
S. Main Ave. and Guenther St.
This event may be renamed House of Diversity as the 2008 show only had one straight ahead jazz act. And that was only because a soul group cancelled. Out of town convention visitors must surely think that San Antonio doesn't know Jazz from a hole in the ground. Who goes to a conjunto festival to hear Jazz? Who goes to a rock concert to hear country. The sponsor of this event owes San Antonio and their media sponsor (KRTU) an apology.
